Senator Thorpe signs joint statement on Israel’s oppressive occupation of Palestine from current and former elected representatives

Senator Thorpe has signed onto a joint statement from current and former elected representatives on the situation in Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The statement, which has also gained the support of a number of Labor government MPs, calls on the Australian Government to push for an immediate permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages and compliance with international law.

The statement also provides crucial historical context to Israel’s occupation of Gaza and apartheid regime.

Quotes attributable to Senator Lidia Thorpe, Gunnai Gunditjmara and Djab Wurrung woman and Independent Victorian Senator representing the Blak Sovereign Movement:

“Today Labor politicians across the country have broken ranks with Prime Minister Albanese to condemn the Israeli government's genocidal bombardment of Gaza.

“Anthony Albanese has done the bare minimum to support a ceasefire. Now is the time for the government to use every tool at its disposal to support an immediate, permanent ceasefire and an end to the occupation.

“The Albanese Government must pull every lever they can by implementing arms embargoes on all warring parties, evacuating Australian citizens and visa holders to safety, and engaging with the international community to support a path to real and lasting peace.

“It is time for an end to Israel's genocide of Palestinians, its siege on Gaza, its military occupation of the West Bank, and its apartheid regime.”
